Research
‘There is now the prospect of new solutions for people with coeliac disease – funding research is the only way to realise that future. The vision of Coeliac UK is an example for the rest of the world, and their support for the vaccine project is extremely encouraging for all of us involved.’
Dr Robert Anderson PhD FRACP, coeliac disease researcher
Coeliac UK is dedicated to funding research in coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). We are already spending £760,000 on four projects and a clinical fellowship which are at the cutting edge of research into coeliac disease. These are:
-
An ambitious project at Imperial College London, which aims to search all 30,000 human genes to identify which variants play a part in the likelihood of someone developing coeliac disease. Read our update
here.
-
A study at the Child Health Institute, where scientists aim to better understand the body's immune reponse to gluten which might lead to treatments preventing the onset of the body's response to gluten. Read our update
here.
-
A project in Australia that is identifying which fragments of gluten cause coeliac disease. The hope is to develop a vaccine against the condition and non-toxic cereals. Read our update
here.
-
An investigation at City Hospital, Birmingham, into the role special cells in the intestine play in stopping iron being absorbed properly by people on a gluten-free diet. Read our update
here.
-
A three year clinical fellowship to support the research into the health risks arising from undiagnosed coeliac disease. Read our update
here.
We need more regular funding to move us nearer to better treatment and even a cure, as well as to raise awareness and provide services to those with coeliac disease and DH please make a donation.
